You can send your first request in a few minutes, entirely in the browser — no code. This walks you from a new account to a working reply and your first API key.
New to the words below (model, token, credit, key, protocol)? Read What is Tokener? first.
1. Sign up and verify your email
Create an account at Sign up with an email and password, or with Google or GitHub. Tokener emails you a verification link; open it before continuing — the account is only usable once the email is verified.
2. Add funds
Add funds, or choose an Agent plan on the Agent plan page — either one lets you make requests. To add funds, go to Add funds. Your balance is held in US dollars; you can pay in USD, or pay in CAD, which is converted to a USD credit at checkout. Payment is handled by Stripe. Your balance updates once the payment completes. To choose a plan instead, open the Agent plan page, press Choose on a tier and pay in Stripe Checkout; the Agent plan guide explains the limits.
3. Send your first message in the Playground
Open the Playground. Pick a model from the Model menu, type a message in the prompt box, and press Send. The reply streams back in the chat. The Playground makes a real, billed request — exactly like the API — so this is your first real call.
4. Read the stats under the reply
Under each reply the Playground shows the token counts and the cost in US dollars — the same figures that appear on your Usage page. This is how you see what a request cost.
5. Create an API key
When you are ready to call Tokener from code or a tool, go to
API keys and create one. The full key (it starts with
tok-) is shown once, at creation — copy it then and store it safely.
Tokener keeps only a hash, so a lost key cannot be shown again; if that happens,
revoke it and create a new one.
6. Copy a first request from Get Code
Back in the Playground, open Get Code. It generates a ready-to-run snippet for the selected protocol, using the model and settings you chose. Paste in your key and run it — that is your first API request.
Where to go next
- Developer Onboarding — the full API guide (endpoints, streaming, errors).
- The integration guides — set up tools like Cline, Dify, LiteLLM and the Vercel AI SDK against Tokener.
- Playground guide — every Playground control explained.
Troubleshooting
- "Verify your email" keeps showing — open the link in the verification email; use the resend option on the "Check your email" screen if it expired.
- Your balance is used up — an empty balance stops requests with the message "Your balance is used up — add funds to continue." Add funds on Add funds.
- Lost your API key — it cannot be recovered. Revoke it on API keys and create a new one.
